1 August 2021 - Five years ago today I released my first album. It was in many ways an experiment, but using three cheap microphones and an entry-level amount of sound recording knowledge, I was able to create something that I can still look back on and be proud of. It's interesting to me to hear techniques I used that have now become mainstays in my process (sampling, use of field recordings, over-compression, to name a few) and others that I rarely rely on anymore (complex chord and song structures, many odd time signatures, a lot of acoustic guitar). The whole thing was an adventure, starting with teaching myself to play the drums – mostly by hacking my way through Rush songs in my parents' basement – to recording religiously in my childhood bedroom and the basement, sweating it out in the summer heat because I didn't want the hum of my air conditioner to be picked up by the microphone. In the end I had something – a whole album – songs, a name, a concept, and a love for what I was doing and the people, places, and things around me.
